The Book of Kells contains two other full-page miniatures, which illustrate episodes from the Passion story. The text of Matthew is illustrated with a full-page illumination of the Arrest of Christ.

Jesus is shown beneath a stylised arcade while being held by two much smaller capitolchamberartists.com: Gospel Book. The story is told as a narrative in first person, where a boy and girl called Iona Callum find a hawk.

The boy tracks the flight off the bird when he travels between Africa and Scotland. The book has a lot italics, which grips the reader into the book. The paragraphs with the italics are only/5.

This all points to Iona rather than Kells, a provenance that most scholars now accept. The production of such a highly ornamented gospel-book was an enormous task, one that was surely beyond the means of a new monastery like Kells in the first years of its existence.
